Republicans in Wonderland

What a tax cut might look like

I have a serious question for the GOP.

In spite of Senate Republicans’ recent refusal to extend unemployment benefits for ordinary Americans struggling through a deep recession, Senator Jon Kyl recently told Fox News that deficits caused by tax cuts didn’t have to be paid for because they spur the economy.

WALLACE: We’re running out of time, so how are you going to pay $678 billion just on the tax cuts for people making more than $250,000 a year?

KYL: You should never raise taxes in order to cut taxes. Surely congress has the authority and it would be right, if we decide we want to cut taxes to spur the economy, not to have to raise taxes in order to offset those costs. You do need to offset the cost of increased spending. And that’s what Republicans object to. But you should never have to offset cost of a deliberate decision to reduce tax rates on Americans.

When asked about this, Mitch McConnell backed up his colleague, going on to explain that he believes, in spite of CBO reports to the contrary, that the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans actually increased federal revenue.

“That’s been the majority Republican view for some time,” Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told TPMDC this afternoon after the weekly GOP press conference. “That there’s no evidence whatsoever that the Bush tax cuts actually diminished revenue. They increased revenue, because of the vibrancy of these tax cuts in the economy. So I think what Senator Kyl was expressing was the view of virtually every Republican on that subject.”

Here’s what I want to know. If “virtually every Republican” believes that tax cuts are the magic mushroom that makes federal revenue grow taller, then why don’t they support tax increases which would, by their reasoning, make government smaller?

“Tim McVeigh Wannabes”

What do you say about something like this?

I’m sure this is going to get parsed to death in the coming days, and we’ll hear the usual weak apologias repeated ad nauseam from all the usual people that this was some version of conservative humor that is somehow lost on the rest of us.

To that I say: okay. I’ll finally accept that explanation, since I’ve heard it repeated each and every time Hannity or Limbaugh or Savage or any of the rest of those clowns say something like this. It probably actually is some weird joke that we all don’t get.

Conservatives apparently think domestic terrorism is funny and cool, and we’re all just going to have to get used to it.

UPDATE: Here’s the whole cut. He actually said that. Context makes it pretty clear what he meant. Here is a reminder, in case anyone needed it, of why Tim McVeigh was a despicable person and a failure as a human being.

Rush Limbaugh Hospitalized with Chest Pains

December 31, 2009 1 comment

Limbaugh, 58, suffered from chest pains, sources said. Limbaugh was sitting in a chair in his ninth-floor hotel room at the Kahala when emergency crews arrived, sources said. He told medical crews that he was taking medication for a back problem, sources said.

Paramedics treated him and took him to Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition. He will not be released from the hospital on Wednesday night, sources said.

Officials with the Rush Limbaugh Program released a statement Wednesday night.

“Rush was admitted to and is resting comfortably in a Honolulu hospital today, after suffering chest pains. Rush appreciates your prayers and well wishes, and he will keep you updated via RushLimbaugh.com.”

According to his website, the worst is over.

ALERT: Rush was admitted to a Honolulu hospital today and is resting comfortably after suffering chest pains. Rush appreciates your prayers and well wishes. He will keep you updated via RushLimbaugh.com and on Thursday’s radio program.

Please remember that Jesus exhorts us to love our enemies, no matter how vile they may be, so let’s all hope and pray that not only does Mr. Limbaugh makes a speedy recovery, but that this brush with mortality causes him to realize the error of his ways.  (Yeah, I know, I know.)

A Brief Note to Conservatives

December 29, 2009 1 comment

Whoa. Judging from the incoming links, I have a whole lot of conservatives coming through this joint right now. While you’re here, I may as well welcome you to the website.

Believe it or not, you are more than welcome to bookmark this site and come back later to tell us libtards how we’ve got it all wrong, how we’re going to wreck the country, and how we’re just bad people in general. I’m not going to tolerate stupidity or dishonesty around here, but if you’re a conservative who is genuinely curious about the other team, this is the place for you. That goes triple if you’re from Memphis.

There is no advertising on River City Mud, so this isn’t some pitch to drive revenue. The only point of this blog is to generate candid discussion about the issues of the day, so if you’ve got something to say, feel free to say it here.
